There are about 24 examples of Lustron homes in the Twin Cities metro area. Almost all of them are in South Minneapolis. Just take a drive down Nicollet Avenue between 5000-5100 and one can find several examples.
Lustron homes are a pre-fabricated home made from 2×2 or 4×4 steel panels over a steel frame. These enameled panels were made in a factory and assembled like Lego bricks on-site. The panels are used for the interior and exterior walls, and ceilings. There were only a total of about 2300 homes made before the company faced financial problems and finally declared bankruptcy in 1950.
